From Stuck to Success: Breaking Free from the Insurance Producer’s Plateau

Updated: Dec 5, 2024

There’s a moment in every insurance producer’s career when their effort plateaus. What once felt full of possibility begins to feel like you’re spinning your wheels—making calls, meeting clients, but the results don’t match the effort. You might be doing everything "right," but the needle isn’t moving.  The good news is you can break free from “Producer’s Plateau” even if it seems difficult.

Rather than thinking about changing your current strategies in sales, moving past the plateau often has more to do with addressing inner blocks that you’re experiencing and focusing on mindset shifts as you work on your career.

Understanding the Producer's Plateau

The scary thing about “Producer’s plateau” is it often comes unrecognized. Sales are starting to stagnate even though you’ve been putting your best efforts. You keep doing the same things that you have always done, but the results don't seem to reflect your hard work.  You keep trying, but to no avail.  It feels like you’re stuck and there’s no way out.

Which areas do the plateau typically comes from?

  • Sales Avoidance: Without realizing it, you might be avoiding the very tasks that lead to growth. Prospecting, client follow-ups, or asking for referrals—these are often put off because they feel uncomfortable or daunting.  You have spent years doing the hard work to get here and you want a better way to continue to grow that isn’t so hard.

  • Busy but Not Productive: It’s easy to get lost in tasks that feel productive, like handling renewals or emails. But these tasks, while necessary, aren’t driving new business. When the bulk of your time is spent here, your growth stagnates.

  • The Motivation Trap: Many producers wait for motivation to get going, but that’s an unreliable strategy. Motivation comes and goes, but real growth comes from consistent, strategic action, even when the excitement fades.

The Psychological Blocks Holding You Back

You might be thinking of going through different productivity-related self-help books or trying relentless productivity tips, but the real challenge lies in deeper blocks that actually slow your progress.

Take sales avoidance, for example. Producers often attribute poor production to “not enough time” or being “too busy.” But in many cases, these reasons are masking deeper fears—fear of rejection, fear of failure, or even fear of success. These fears can create subconscious barriers that keep you from taking the steps needed to generate new business.

In some cases, producers convince themselves that they’re “doing fine” even when their numbers aren’t growing. This form of denial is dangerous because it leads to complacency. You start settling for the status quo rather than striving for the growth you know is possible.

Moving Past the Plateau

Breaking through the plateau doesn’t require drastic changes. Sometimes, it’s about making subtle shifts in how you approach yourself and your work. Start with awareness then gradually proceed to confronting the blocks that are holding you back from growing.

Regain your momentum by working on your personal empowerment. Do not wait for motivation to kickstart your growth, instead focus on inside actions that drive outside results. For example, as you build your mindset, then that mindset can help to push you forward even when it feels like you’re stuck.

Additionally, understanding performance and differentiation can set you on a new path. According to Insurance Journal, only 20% of new insurance agents survive beyond the first year, while the remaining 80% fail.  If you’ve made it beyond that, you’re already in the minority, but you could be on a producer plateau.  Ask yourself, what am I doing that induces people to want to work with me? Develop strategies around this to be more effective.

Lastly, be open to learning. Sometimes, all it takes to break through a plateau is learning a new strategy or approaching your work from a fresh perspective. Training programs designed to address these emotional and strategic challenges can provide the tools you need to push past your current limits and reignite your growth.
